Institutional Capacity Development for Regional Development Associations (RDAs) in Ethiopia

Overview

In Ethiopia, many Regional Development Associations (RDAs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) have emerged from the voluntary efforts of local activists striving to address community issues. While their grassroots approach is invaluable, these organizations often face challenges due to limited organizational capacity and project management skills. These deficiencies can hinder their ability to secure funding from national and international donors and impact their overall effectiveness.

To address these challenges, the Institutional Capacity Building Program focuses on enhancing the governance, leadership, and operational efficiency of RDAs. The program is active in four key organizations:

  • Anywaa Community Development Association (ACDA) and Ethiopian Nuer Development Association (ENDA) in the Gambella region.
  • Tikuret Legumuz Hizib Development Association (TLDA) and Benshangul Development Association (BDA) in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Program Objectives

The program aims to:

  1. Enhance Skills and Knowledge: Train staff and board members of the four RDAs in essential organizational and professional skills.
  2. Strengthen Organizational Capacity: Evaluate and address the institutional gaps within RDAs to improve resource mobilization and project implementation.
  3. Promote Strategic Engagement: Develop strategic plans and improve overall governance and leadership for effective project management.

Implementation and Support

alignAfrica, with funding from Christian Aid Ethiopia, has developed a comprehensive capacity-building package. This initiative spans one year and includes:

  • Training and Development: Providing RDAs’ staff and volunteers with training in organizational management, strategic planning, project proposal writing, and other key areas.
  • Technical Assistance: Offering ongoing support to improve internal controls, accounting practices, and the development of human resource and financial manuals.

Additional Projects

1. Strengthening Institutional Capacity of RDAs (December 2015 - December 2016)

Funded by Christian Aid, this project aimed to strengthen the capacities of the Ethiopian Nuer Development Association and Agnuack Community Development Association in Gambella, and Tikuret for Gumuz People Development Association and Berta People Development Association in Benishangul-Gumuz. The project benefited four RDAs, their staff, and board members.

2. Socio-Economic Profiles Update (February 2017 - September 2017)

This project, funded by Christian Aid, focused on updating socio-economic profiles in Gambella and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. It directly benefited 700 individuals, including 438 women, through comprehensive data collection efforts in Lare Woreda, Awol Woreda, Sedal Woreda, and Assosa Town Administration.

The Institutional Capacity Building Program continues to foster the growth and effectiveness of RDAs, enabling them to better serve their communities and achieve their developmental goals.
